Winter Driving and EV Range
When you consider EV available range and cold climate conditions, also consider the power consumption that goes into vehicle visibility and cabin comfort.
If you preheat the cabin, less energy is used in cold climate Driving.
The reason is peak energy consumption is used during the transit if heating and driving happen at the same time. Consider warming the cabin five (5) minutes in advance of your drive.
Peak current is less efficient than cruising power output. 300 kW are used by gas fire power units. Only 50 kW is necessary to move an EV in city Driving. Less so if your driving at less than 50 mph. Thats a fully loaded vehicle with a driver and three (3) other passengers.
Cabin heating and windscreen defogfer accounts for 10-15 extra kW. Taking time into account, youre adding 25% more power. Leave the defogger on, and you are looking at figures closer to 10%. Negligible for a regular commute are climate control requirement.
Try this out and consider it from then on. Also consider warming the garage if you have the HVAC accessories or installation availble.
